ASTON VILLA’S MOVE FOR UNAI EMERY SHAMES WOLVES

Wolves sacked Bruno Lage on October 2 and over three weeks later, there is still no replacement for the Portuguese. The club made a beeline for Julen Lopetegui following his sacking by Sevilla. But they were stung when he declined the opportunity in order to spend time with his family.

The Spaniard’s father is reportedly not very well at the moment. His decision is understandable, and so Wolves were forced to look elsewhere. The club then attempted to move for Mick Beale at QPR.

But he decided to show loyalty to the club that gave him a chance to be a first-team manager. After that second rejection, Wolves announced they would be keeping Steve Davis in interim charge until 2023, with James Collins and Tony Roberts to provide support. Executive chairman Jeff Shi stated that the decision was reached as a result of there being ‘no outstanding candidates’.

Wolves the proceeded to lose 4-0 against Leicester City on Sunday, leaving supporters very worried about the club’s fate this season. And arguably, Wolves have just been shamed by Aston Villa, who have taken less than a week to replace Steven Gerrard. They last night confirmed that Unai Emery would be taking over, with reports suggesting (Guardian) they have paid just over £5 million in compensation to Villarreal. This is a club that has recognised the need for change and acted swiftly.

Aston Villa have left Wolves looking silly, as Unai Emery prepares to make Premier League return. It is not so much the actual appointment of Emery that makes Wolves look bad. That said, Emery would have been a great appointment by Wolves as he’s a talented coach. But it’s more the decisive way in which Villa have acted. Emery was in position at Villarreal, but has now been prised away with no issues.
